The most important thing to understand
The LTVP is not a step on a ladder that leads to PR. It is a separate pass, issued by ICA so that a family member can live here. When you apply for PR, ICA does not assess you as “an LTVP holder”. It assesses you under one of its published categories.

An LTVP+ is worth noting here. ICA grants LTVP+ to foreign spouses of citizens with a citizen child, or generally after about three years of marriage, alongside financial capability and good conduct. When to apply
ICA publishes no minimum LTVP period before a PR application, so the honest answer is that timing is a judgement call. These are the points that usually change the picture.

While your PR application is pending
- Keep your LTVP valid. A PR application does not extend or replace it. Renew the LTVP as usual, at least 3 months before expiry.
- Keep your Letter of Consent current if you are working.
- Tell ICA about changes such as a new job, a new address or a new child.
- Do not travel on an expired pass, and keep your passport valid.

ICA does not publish reasons for rejection, so the useful question is which factor was thin: length of residency, economic contribution, the sponsor’s stability, or the documents themselves.
