The key point: LTVP+ is only for foreign spouses of Singapore citizens. If your sponsor is a PR (not a citizen), your spouse stays on the standard LTVP.
Who qualifies for LTVP+?
You are automatically considered for LTVP+ when you apply for the LTVP, if eligible. Eligibility for the foreign spouse of a citizen is stronger if:
- You have at least one Singaporean child from the marriage, or
- You have been married for at least three years, which is considered more favourably even without a citizen child.
How to apply
The LTVP is sponsor-initiated, so your Singaporean or PR spouse applies for you.
- The sponsor logs in to ICA’s e-Service and submits the application on the applicant’s behalf.
- Prepare the documents: the sponsor’s NRIC and passport, proof of citizenship or PR status, the applicant’s passport, and the marriage certificate.
- Submit and wait for ICA’s assessment.
You do not separately apply for LTVP+; the system considers you for it automatically.
Processing time and the PMLA
- Standard timeline. An LTVP application for the foreign spouse of a citizen can take up to 6 months.
- The fast track. If you completed the Pre-Marriage Long-Term Visit Pass Assessment (PMLA) before marrying, processing is much quicker, around 6 weeks.
The PMLA lets a couple check the foreign partner’s LTVP eligibility before the wedding, which removes a lot of uncertainty and speeds up the pass afterwards. If you are planning to marry, doing the PMLA first is worth it.
Approval is not guaranteed even for spouses of citizens. Strong evidence of a genuine relationship and the sponsor’s financial stability improves your chances.
Can an LTVP spouse work?
This is a common question, and the answer depends on the version:
- Standard LTVP. Working is not automatic. Your spouse needs a Letter of Consent (LOC), applied for through an employer and managed by MOM.
- Spouse of a citizen and LTVP+. ICA may issue a pre-approved Letter of Consent (PLOC) together with the pass, letting your spouse work without applying for a separate work pass.
So the LTVP+ (and often the LTVP for a citizen’s spouse) is the more work-friendly route.

- LTVP+: the first pass runs 3 years, and each renewal can run up to 5 years.
- Standard LTVP: ICA does not publish a fixed validity; it is set case by case, commonly up to around 2 years, and renewed alongside the sponsor.
Either way, the pass is tied to the sponsor and the marriage, so it is renewed as your circumstances continue.
