Changing or Losing Your Job While Your PR Application Is Pending

Quick answer: A job change during the waiting period does not automatically end your PR application, but it does change the facts ICA is assessing. Tell ICA through the Update information function in your case summary page on MyICA, or through the enquiry form if the field is not listed. The bigger issue is usually your work pass: most applicants apply as Employment Pass or S Pass holders, and that pass is tied to the employer. If you are retrenched, the pass is cancelled, and the basis of your application changes.

Two different clocks run at once here, and people watch the wrong one. The PR application is assessed by ICA. Your right to stay in Singapore is governed by MOM and your pass. Sort the pass first.

Before you do anything else: the pass

SituationWhat happens to your pass
You move to a new employerYour current pass is cancelled and the new employer applies for a new one. You cannot start work until the new pass is issued
You are retrenched or resign without a new jobThe employer cancels the pass. MOM can issue a Short-Term Visit Pass so you can remain in Singapore for a limited period, but you cannot work on it
Your contract ends and is not renewedSame as above
You stay with the same employer in a new roleNo change to the pass, though the job details change

Our Employment Pass service handles new applications, and the EP renewal guide covers the salary thresholds that rise in 2027 and 2028.

What it means for the PR application

ChangeEffect on a pending application
Promotion with the same employerGenerally positive. Update the salary and title
Move to a better-paid role at a new employerNot fatal, but the employment record now spans two employers. Update ICA
Lateral move with a short gapExplain the gap and the new role
Retrenchment with no new job yetThe weakest position, because economic contribution and current employment are part of the assessment
Moving overseasLength of residency and roots in Singapore are assessed, so this usually undermines the application

ICA assesses family ties to Singaporeans, economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile and length of residency, weighed together. A job change affects the economic contribution picture rather than disqualifying you. Our guide to what ICA really evaluates explains the factors.

What to do, in order

  1. Sort the work pass. New employer applies, or the existing one is cancelled and you understand how long you may remain.
  2. Update ICA. Use Update information in your case summary page on MyICA, or the enquiry form if the field is not listed. See our guide on updating a pending PR application.
  3. Get a fresh employer letter once you are in the new role, stating occupation, date of employment, and basic and gross monthly salary.
  4. Keep payslips from both employers for the period covered by the application.
  5. Do not submit a second PR application while the first is pending.
  6. Keep checking status through ICA’s e-Service, as covered in our guide to PR application status.

Continue, or withdraw and apply later?

There is no single answer, but the pattern is reasonably clear.

Your positionUsually better to
New job secured, similar or better salary, no gapContinue, and update ICA
New job secured after a short gapContinue, and explain the gap
Unemployed, actively interviewing, pass still validTake advice. The assessment may be made while you are between roles
Unemployed, pass cancelled, no offer yetConsider re-establishing employment first. ICA advises reapplying when there is a substantial change in circumstances
Leaving SingaporeThe application is unlikely to succeed, since roots and residency are assessed

If an application is unsuccessful, you can apply again later. Our guide on what to do after a PR rejection covers that decision.

Before you resign

If you are thinking about a move and a PR application is pending, a few practical points:

  • The notice period matters. A gap between passes is the thing to avoid.
  • Ask the new employer to apply early. Their application is assessed on their own COMPASS profile, which is firm-specific.
  • Do not rely on the PR application to keep you in Singapore. It confers nothing until approved.
  • Keep documents. Letters, payslips and contracts from both employers.

If you have not applied yet and are weighing a job change first, our guide on whether switching jobs before applying affects your chances covers that side.

How First Immigration can help

  • Sequencing, so the pass and the PR application do not collide.
  • A new Employment Pass or S Pass application with the new employer, including a COMPASS pre-check.
  • Updating ICA with the right documents, through the right channel.
  • Honest advice on timing, including when waiting is the stronger play.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change jobs while my PR application is pending?

Yes. It does not automatically end the application, but you must sort out your work pass with the new employer and update ICA.

Will changing jobs affect my PR application?

It changes the employment facts ICA is assessing. A promotion or better-paid role is generally positive. A gap or unemployment weakens the economic contribution picture.

How do I tell ICA about a job change?

Through the Update information function in your case summary page on MyICA, or through the enquiry form if the field is not listed.

What happens to my work pass if I change employers?

The current pass is cancelled and the new employer applies for a new one. You cannot work until the new pass is issued.

What if I am retrenched while my PR application is pending?

Your pass is cancelled by the employer. MOM can issue a Short-Term Visit Pass so you can remain for a limited period, but you cannot work on it. Tell ICA and take advice on whether to continue.

Does a pending PR application let me stay in Singapore?

No. Your right to stay comes from your pass, not from the application.

Should I withdraw my application if I lose my job?

It depends. If you expect to be re-employed soon, continuing may be reasonable. If not, re-establishing employment before applying again is usually stronger.

Can I submit a new PR application while the first is pending?

No. Update the existing application instead.

Do I need a new employer letter after moving jobs?

Yes. Get one from the current employer, dated within 3 months of the application, stating occupation, date of employment and basic and gross monthly salary.

Does ICA tell me whether a job change hurt my application?

No. ICA does not publish reasons for its decisions.
